Calving TimeClick Here!

Well here i am again, sorry i haven’t wrote in awhile but family and holidays you all know how it is.  Time to start calving on the homestead here in about a month, excited and can’t wait to see those new babies, i believe this was my mothers favorite time of the year alot of hard work but the payoff when you see those little ones are great.                                                                                                                                                                           We put the bull in with the cows usually around the first week in may, which I don’t know why we decide to do that so we have calves when the weather is so cold but thats what we do.                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Know let me tell you a little bit of history from the last 18 years. When i first moved back out to the ranch my stepfather was still alive, he passed away 1 year later, my mother needed help and so it began. we started out with about 60 head and it grew to be almost 100 head, can you believe a little middle aged woman and her daughter running that many head but it is true. We got along great most of the time but as you know there is always disagreements especially with two hard headed women, but we usually thought alike thank goodness.                                                                                                                                                                                             Today we only have about 15 head of cows left, after my mother passed away in 2011 its just been harder and harder to keep things going, but still trying even if our herd, i guess petting zoo, they are all tame and you can pet most just like you would your dog ha,ha. now that can be dangerous at times, you think you’ll be ok this time of year but they love their babies and will protect if they feel they are in trouble, careful when tagging or giving a shot they will probably try to get ya. Always keep your eyes open and tyr not to turn your back for to long. Know some just let you do what you need to do but there are always a couple that just wont have any of it.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Now as i said i love seeing the new babies and all but it will be late nights and sometimes all night, its cold and slick your tired all the time andyou get grouchy, but when its done you always feel much better after you catch up on sleep. Thank goddness for my husband as he does most of the night checks now as i had taken ill about 6 years ago but feeling much better now. I have always done the day checks in which every couple hours or so you need to check those mommas, not checking ends up with dire conseqenses. I do believe that every year those mommas come up with something different that you have never seen or heard of, you just buck up and try to make it better.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   I will definatly let you know how everything turns out this season and if anything new arises. Keep your fingers crossed that this year will be a great one with little problems.
